Tribune Magazine calls for Lib Dem votes in Westbury

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 7th Aug 2004

Cllr Duncan Hames' campaign in Westbury received a boost today from an unlikely source. The long established weekly journal of the left, Tribune magazine, has urged readers to vote Liberal Democrat in the Westbury constituency at the next General Election.

Paul Anderson, in his Tribune column writes:

"Lib Dem and Labour supporters should vote Lib Dem in England and Wales where a Lib Dem won in 2001 and in:...(list of constituencies)...Westbury"

Describing the Liberal Democrats as 'infinitely better than the Tories', he also writes:

"In those constituencies, the best way to beat the Tory candidate next time round is to vote Lib Dem."

Commenting on the report, Cllr Duncan Hames said:

"I'm always happy to welcome support from former Labour and Conservative supporters alike."

"Former Labour voters are switching to the Lib Dems because we are now the natural home for people who wish to defend our public services, who believe in international co-operation through the United Nations, and who want to conserve our environment."

"It's not only because they know that Labour can't win in the Westbury constituency." Added Cllr Hames.
