Hames calls for Iraq exit strategy

2.20.00pm GMT Thu 27th Jan 2005

Cllr Duncan Hames has backed calls for an Iraq exit strategy following the Iraqi elections at the end of January.

The Liberal Democrats have called upon the Prime Minister to set out a proper exit strategy from Iraq - including the phased withdrawal of British troops - as the security situation allows after the Iraqi elections at the end of this month.

Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, set out his case saying:

"It is unlikely that these elections will see an end to the wider insurgency. And Iraq has now become a crucible of militant terrorism. For years to come Iraq will face that threat. There are some who are of the opinion that the mere presence of British and American troops in Iraq feeds the insurgency. There is some truth in that, especially after the initial mistakes that were made, the heavy-handedness of operations likes Fallujah, and the well-publicised instances of abuse at the hands of coalition forces."

"I would like to see a phased withdrawal of British troops from Iraq, as soon as the situation allows. I would like to see the replacement of British troops with those from other countries, especially Islamic countries. I would like to see a proper exit strategy set out by London and Washington, with a time-line that augments and supports the democratic process." said Mr Kennedy.

Holland, the Czech Republic and Portugal, whose troops operate with the British in the southern sector and number in the thousands, have announced their imminent withdrawal regardless of the situation on the ground. The Government have been less than straightforward in their response.

"The Prime Minister is using his usual formulation about having 'no plans' to send in more troops to replace those leaving. But such uncertainty is simply unacceptable - for the troops or their families". commented Westbury Liberal Democrat spokesman, Cllr Duncan Hames.

"The Prime Minister should make a statement regarding the elections in Iraq. He should set out a proper exit strategy, including the phased withdrawal of British troops, as the security situation allows." concluded Cllr Hames.
