Victory for people power in Corsham

A highly unpopular scheme to put traffic lights at junctions on the A4 through Corsham has been scrapped following a public outcry.

Wiltshire Council highway's officers have changed their mind about the plan, so now there will instead be improved roundabouts at the Hare and Hounds and Park Lane and a new traffic filter lane at the Leafy Lane junction. There will also be zebra crossings at the Hare and Hounds to improve safety for pedestrians.

There will though still be traffic lights at the junction of Bradford Road and the top of Westwells Road to cater for the increased traffic.

Dick Tonge, Cabinet member for highways, said: "The revised scheme will accommodate the increased traffic from the MoD development at Basil Hill, other known developments and those associated with the sites being vacated by the MoD.

"I'm pleased that the assessment has enabled us to overcome the objections to the original scheme. The new MoD site at Basil Hill is excellent news for Corsham and will lead to jobs and stability during these very difficult times."
