About Duncan Hames

Duncan Hames, Liberal Democrat MP for Chippenham

Local campaigner, Duncan Hames is the Liberal Democrat MP for Chippenham constituency including Bradford on Avon, Chippenham, Corsham and Melksham.

Duncan lives in the village of Holt and over the past seven years has gained a reputation as a hard working campaigner for our area: fighting against local post office and hospital closures, and campaigning to get Wiltshire's rail service back on track. Duncan is also fighting plans by Wiltshire Council to allow the building of thousands of new houses on flood pains and local beauty spots.

Duncan has given up his business to be a full-time MP for our area, as he promised during his election campaign. He has also put it on the record that if elected he will not employ and family or household members using taxpayers' money; nor will he claim mortgage payments on a second home.

Duncan served as a West Wiltshire district councillor representing the Holt ward for four years before standing down from the council in May 2007. In that time, he chaired the Audit committee and held the Community portfolio on the council's executive Cabinet.

Duncan has served as a local school governor for the past eight years. Duncan believes we should be investing more in education. He benefited from a free education and a partial maintenance grant at University and wants future students to have the opportunity of a free education too. He feels strongly that students, who now have to pay tuition fees in England, and their families are being penalised unfairly.

In his spare time Duncan enjoys running. He recently ran the Chippenham Half Marathon to help raise funds for Parkinson's Disease Society.
