    Article: Dec 23, 2018

Thank you to all who have joined us in saying how sad they are at the untimely death of our former Leader, Lord Paddy Ashdown.

It was a privilege to have known Paddy. He was a frequent visitor to North Wiltshire and was the guest speaker at our 2017 Annual Dinner, just one year ago.

Paddy inspired many to join the Lib Dems. A Liberal to his core, he was a person of great integrity, courage and ‎compassion. A man who loved this country.

A former Royal Marine Officer and member of the elite Special Boat Squadron who saw active service, Paddy knew and understood the difference between true patriotism and narrow nationalism.

For Paddy patriotism was about working positively with others for the common good of all. Whereas nationalism seeks to blame others for the problems of all.

For that reason Paddy was a passionate and committed supporter of Britain remaining a member of the European Union. Paddy believed that these should be a People's Vote to decide whether the final deal is better than what we already have

He will be greatly missed but his legacy lives on in the Liberal Democrats he helped create and was so proud to lead.

If you share Paddy's values of fairness, liberty, equality of opportunity, environmentalism and internationalism then ‎come and join us.

Reacting to the ‎news of Wiltshire Council's last minute U-turn to drop Sunday car parking charges due to start this Sunday, Leader of the Opposition and Lib Dem Group Leader on Wiltshire Council Ian Thorn said,

"I'm delighted that Wiltshire Council's Cabinet have finally seen sense. These Sunday parking charges were a terrible idea.

Wiltshire Liberal Democrats have launched a County wide petition to force a full Council debate and vote on controversial new car parking charges.

The new charges for Sunday and Bank Holiday parking in Wiltshire Council car parks will be introduced from 19th November in the run up to Christmas.

The Lib Dems hope to get 5,000 signatures on a petition calling for the charges to be dropped. If successful, that will force a full debate and vote on the charges at the next meeting of Wiltshire Council in the New Year.

The Lib Dems have launched a petition against Wiltshire Council's plan to increase parking charges, including Sundays and bank holidays. Corsham's historic town centre has over 80 retailers and restaurants but getting people to use it is a growing challenge. Retailers have expressed concerns that increased parking fees will drive more business out of the town.

As many will have noticed, the Redrow sign has disappeared from Bath Road, Pickwick. This may be due to Redrow pulling out of the deal but Gladman Developments are fighting on against local opposition.

Pickwick Liberal Democrat Wiltshire Cllr Ruth Hopkinson has fought this plan for years, alongside the Pickwick Association, but although the missing sign is a good omen, we shouldn't count our chickens.
