The latest figures on NHS vacancies reveal that there was 3,262 vacancies for nurses in the NHS in the South West region in July to September 2019. This means that 10.5% of posts were unfilled, showing the NHS staff shortage crisis to get worse.

The Conservatives have presided over a staffing crisis in our health service, failing to adequately ensure the NHS has the workforce it needs to care for our loved ones.

The Liberal Democrats have announced plans to scrap business rates and replace them with a landowner levy, to "breathe new life" into high streets in Swindon

The party would replace business rates with a commercial landowner levy, based on the value of the land only. This would take the cost off businesses and help support high streets.

The proposals would cut taxes for businesses by 16% in Swindon

By taxing landowners rather than businesses, half a million small businesses across the country would be spared the burden of property taxation.

Liberal Democrat candidate Stan Pajak said:

"Many retailers and small businesses in Swindon are under pressure from economic uncertainty, the rise of online retail and the burden of business rates."

The Liberal Democrats announce today that they would allow Swindon Council to increase council tax by up to 500% on empty homes that are left empty long-term.

The latest Government statistics show that there were 484 homes left empty long-term in Swindon in 2018.

In response, and as part of its plan to alleviate the housing crisis, the Liberal Democrats would legislate to allow Swindon Council to increase council tax by up to 500% where properties are being left vacant long-term. The revenues would then be reinvested to build new homes for the community or to invest in local services.
